Balkan Working Group on Disinformation
Regional collaboration to combat disinformation across Southeast Europe

The Balkan Working Group on Disinformation is a regional, multi-stakeholder initiative convened by the Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship (CIDC) at the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG). Our goal is to combat disinformation, strengthen information integrity, and enhance democratic resilience in the Balkans by bringing together experts and stakeholders for collaborative discussions, research, and strategic action.
Through country-based working groups, we will analyze regional disinformation trends, identify effective countermeasures, and develop actionable recommendations to promote media literacy and combat malign influence.
Goals of the Initiative
Understand Regional Disinformation Trends
We bring together local experts and stakeholders, the initiative aims to analyze disinformation trends and understand how false narratives take hold across the region.
Strengthen Cross-Border Collaboration
The initiative fosters cooperation between researchers, journalists, and civil society to share knowledge and coordinate responses to disinformation threats.
Promote Media Literacy & Public Awareness
By identifying patterns and amplifying trusted information, the working groups aim to improve public understanding and media resilience in the region.
Develop Strategic Recommendations
Country teams contribute findings to support evidence-based policymaking, media practices, and regional strategies to counter malign influence.
